Given the relaxation of Covid restrictions, we're gradually re-opening here at Howden Shire Hall starting with some of our hosted groups and classes from 17th May.  See the classes section of our website for more information.

The Shire Hall is a multi-functional building used for community hires such as parties, wedding receptions and fund-raising events. It is also used as an arts centre with live music, theatre, comedy and cinema.

Celebrate the Sisterhood in 2018!

Dubbed  ‘the year of the woman’,  2018 marks the 100th anniversary of women’s enfranchisement in the UK. A century ago in 1918 the Representation of the People Act was passed, granting some British women the right to vote for the first time in history. In more recent times we’ve also seen the rise of the global Time’s Up rallies, with women of all ages, races and backgrounds coming together to protest sexual harassment and assault.
In a nod to these exciting times, and as part of its 2018 events calendar, Howden Shire Hall is hosting a number of shows to celebrate the sisterhood!
Kicking off later this month on 29th and 30th June, Cast in Stone presents The Vagina Monologues by Eve Ensler. Highlighting real women's stories of intimacy, vulnerability, and sexual self-discovery, the show is made up of various personal monologues read by a diverse group of local female actors.
Next up on Friday 26th October is a spoof comedy-play, Withering Looks, based on the Bronte sisters and presented by LipService Theatre. Winner of the Manchester Evening News Theatre Award and the Critics Award for Comedy at the Edinburgh Festival, this hilarious production features comic duo Maggie Fox and Sue Ryding dusting off their crinolines, donning an array of flattering bonnets and sitting at rained-lashed windows in a pale and decorative manner, all for your entertainment!
Concluding this theme of events at the back end of the year, the hall plays host to SHE Productions’ It’s Different For Girls - a brand new musical inspired by Hull’s own 1960s girl band, Mandy & The Girlfriends. Showing for one night only on Friday 30th November, the production documents the journey of five young women as they challenge the music industry and prove that they are not just ‘good for girls’.
